How It Works
How gold value is calculated
Short answer: weight × purity factor × current spot price per gram.
Confirm the weight
Weigh the item in grams on a jewelry-grade scale, or use the weight stated on a coin or bar's certificate.
Identify the purity
Check the hallmark stamp (e.g., 750, 916, 999) or use our Purity Checker if no stamp is visible.
Apply the live spot price
We convert the current per-ounce spot price into a per-gram figure automatically.
Review premiums separately
Dealer margin, craftsmanship or numismatic value are shown as separate line items, never hidden inside the base number.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
We start from the live international spot price per troy ounce, convert it to grams, then multiply by your entered weight and the purity factor for the selected karat (e.g., 0.999 for 24K, 0.750 for 18K). Dealer premiums and making charges are shown separately, never folded silently into the base value.
Spot price is the raw wholesale market price for pure gold. Jewelers and dealers add a premium for refining, fabrication, retail margin and, when buying jewelry, craftsmanship. Expect the price you receive to sit below spot, and the price you pay to sit above it.
Spot prices refresh continuously during market hours from our data provider, with a visible last-updated timestamp on every price panel so you always know the age of the figure you are viewing.
Check for a hallmark stamp first (e.g., 750, 916, 999). If none is visible, our Gold Purity Checker walks through visual and at-home indicators, though a professional acid or XRF test is the only fully reliable method.
By weight and purity, no — the underlying metal is worth the same. But scrap is usually valued at closer to melt value, since a buyer will refine it, while intact jewelry can sometimes command a resale premium for design or brand.
A troy ounce (31.1035 grams) is the standard unit for precious metals and is about 10% heavier than a standard avoirdupois ounce (28.35 grams) used for everyday goods. Always confirm which unit a quoted price refers to.
Higher purity (22K–24K) is generally easier to value and sell quickly since it maps directly to spot price with minimal judgment calls. Lower-karat pieces (10K–14K) may need more careful appraisal due to the larger alloy proportion.
Yes. Our Country Gold Prices section converts live spot price into local currency for major markets including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.
Melt value is the raw worth of the pure gold content in an item if it were melted down today, based purely on weight, purity and spot price — before any premium, craftsmanship value, or numismatic value is added.
Import duties, local taxes, VAT/GST, transportation costs and regional dealer margins vary by country, so converted spot price and the retail price on the ground can diverge even though the underlying metal is identical.
We don't give personal financial advice, but our Gold Investment Calculator and Gold vs Stocks guide lay out historical performance, inflation-hedging behavior and portfolio-allocation considerations so you can weigh the decision against your own goals.
Divide grams by 31.1035 to get troy ounces, or use our Gram to Troy Ounce Converter for instant, error-free conversion including tola and baht units common in South Asian and Southeast Asian markets.
It's millesimal fineness — parts of pure gold per 1,000. 916 means 91.6% pure gold (22K), 750 means 75% pure gold (18K), and 999 means 99.9% pure gold (24K).
